Hancock the Movie

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, wait-it’s Hancock, a surly, friendless, super-nonhuman who likes to “fly while drunk,” busting up highway signs, interstates and buildings along the way.
Hancock opens this week and will fulfill its mission to entertain. Just don’t expect the usual jerk-turns-nice, superhero-formula, action film. Played by Will Smith, Hancock just happens to like to do good deeds and get the bad guy. Trouble is, despite his crime-busting actions, no one likes him because he is careless and downright offensive.
So when Ray Embry (Jason Bateman), a “save the world” PR guy, decides he wants to help Hancock change his image the plot begins its turns and twists. Mary Embry (Charlize Theron), Ray’s wife, adds another mystery dimension to the plot twists.
Smith and Bateman both give excellent performances and the script allows them to play off each other for some hearty laughs.
Handheld cameras bring an indie sensibility to this blockbuster-the unmistakable imprint of Friday Night Lights (FNL) director Peter Berg. The first time you really notice his signature camera moves is during a PR pitch by Embry to a group of execs in a boardroom. You will have felt as though you just stepped out of Hancock and right into FNL. It’s worth noting that one of those corporate fellows just happens to be Texas-based, Friday Night Lights actor Brad Leland (Buddy Garity on FNL).
Hancock is full of profane language and violence. It’s a good action flick for more mature audiences. Overall, it’s big on adventure and entertainment. This summer, Hancock is saving the world, whether we like it or not.
